The socket welding flange is similar to a slip-on flange.the only difference is that socket welding flange has a bore and a counter bore. This counter bore functions as a socket to hold the pipe before welding. The counter bore is slightly larger than the OD of the matching pipe in order to insert pipe into the flange. while the diameter of the smaller bore is the same as the OD of the matching pipe.
The internal recess on the inside diameter of Socket welding Flange is to allow for a smoother flow of the process fluid. The advantage of Socket welding Flange is to creates a smooth bore with the proper welding and grinding. While The negative of Socket welding Flange is that it can be more expensive than a slip-on flange due to more intricate machining and Socket welding Flange can be less readily available than slip-on flange due to the fact that the bottom half of the inside diameter must be made to the same schedule as the pipe that is being used. When ordering the socket welding flange, customer must specify the schedule needed. These socket welding flanges were designed to use on smaller sizes of pipe at higher pressure ratings.
